How to generate a hash
- Type your text, or switch to File and drop a file.
- See its MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes at once.
- Add a key to get HMACs instead, and pick hexadecimal or Base64.
- To verify a download, paste its published checksum: the hash it matches is marked.
Questions
How do I check a file's checksum?
Drop the file, then paste the checksum from the download page in the check field: if it matches one of the hashes, the file is exactly the one published.
Which hash should I use?
SHA-256 for most uses. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security; use them only for checksums where an older system asks for them.
What is an HMAC?
A hash made with a secret key, so only someone with the key can make or check it; APIs use it to sign their requests.
Is my file or text uploaded?
No, the hashes are worked out by your browser, so it's safe for private files and keys.
